Benkelman Beam Apparatus

The device was developed by U.S. Bureau of Public Roads and is used to determine of the rebound deflection of flexible pavement under static load.

General Descripation & Specification

Benkelman Beam : Beam Ratio : 2 : 1

  • Length of the probe arm from pivot to probe point 244cm.
  • Length of measurement arm from pivot to dial 122 cm.
  • Distance form pivot to front legs 25cm.
  • Distance from pivot to rear legs 166cm and
  • Lateral spacing of front support legs 33cm.

The complete instrument is light weight and is supplied in two parts for easy assembling and disassembling on site with help of hand tools and also it becomes easy to carry with the help of handle.

In use one end of the beam rests at a point under investigation while the beam is pivoted at the centre. The free end carries a dial gauge to record the deflections and the other end is kept on the a stable platform. Because of beam ratio small deflection is magnified and recorded on the dial gauge.
